Hastings and Bexhill Mencap turns 75!

In 2026, Hastings & Bexhill Mencap celebrates 75 years of supporting people with learning disabilities in our local community.

Our story began in the 1950s, when a group of parents and carers came together to create better opportunities for their children. Their determination laid the foundations for the charity we are today.

Over the years, we have continued to develop and adapt, providing opportunities for people to learn new skills, explore their interests, make choices and live fulfilling lives. Today, our work includes Open Door, Active Arts, residential care at Westwood, our charity shop and our recently redeveloped Frimley Centre.

While much has changed over the past 75 years, our commitment to the people we support has remained at the heart of everything we do.

As we celebrate our history, we also look to the future, building on the vision of those who started it all and continuing to create a community where people with learning disabilities are valued, included and supported to reach their potential.
